What can I do to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome?

...continued.  - which rub against the walls of the carpal tunnel (the narrow space at the base of your palm) as you flex your hand or fingers-become swollen and press against a major nerve.  treatments include steroids, physical therapy or surgery. There are steps you can take to prevent it:

  • Take breaks every half hour from your keyboard to stretch your hands: Make tight fists, hold one second, then stretch your fingers out wide and hold for five seconds. Repeat several times.  Also, when possible, alternate your office activity by photocopying, collating, filing, etc.
